Born as Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar on 22 June 1974 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, he is the son of film director S. A. Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shoba Chandrasekhar. Vijay's breakthrough came in 1996 with the romance film "Poove Unakkaga," followed by successful films like "Love Today" (1997) and "Kadhalukku Mariyadhai" (1997), the latter earning him the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor.
